Every single thing in the universe, is constantly in motion and vibrating at various frequencies. In its simplest definition, this is recognized as energy, and the beauty of crystals/stones is in the way they are able to absorb, harness, channel and emit these energies. In essence, each crystal is reactive to its environment.
Crystals often travel long and arduous distances, from source to seller, before finally reaching its eventual owner. Each transition exposes the stones to energies that may be misaligned with your own, which can affect their ability to absorb or redirect the negativity you’re working to release.
The purpose of cleansing is to purify and honour the stone, recognizing the vast journey it embarked on to get to you.
Regularly cleansing and recharging your stones is the only way to restore your crystal to its natural, pure state and this act of care can also become part of the bond you build with it.
When is the right time to cleanse and charge my crystal?
With time, you will become well attuned with your crystals and you’ll be able to feel their energy. If you notice that they lack that “spark” they once exuded or if they seem duller than usual, then it is time to cleanse and charge them.
Avoid cleaning the surface of your crystals under running water when you spot any dust or foreign impurities on them; know that a majority of the crystals do not do well with water as they will either disintegrate or simply break apart. The best way to have most crystals cleaned is by using a brush or a slightly damp cloth.
Methods of cleansing and charging your crystals :
SUN LIGHT Let your crystal bathe in the early morning or late evening sunlight, but never under the direct heat of the midday sun as this may fade some crystals. This method is not recommended for any Quartz crystals as their properties enable them to magnify and focus sunlight, which might create fire sparks if the sunlight is sufficiently intense.
MOON LIGHT During a New Moon or Full Moon, place your crystal by the window sill or directly under the moon’s luminescence.
SOUND The gentle, harmonious vibrations emitted by acoustic instruments or Singing Bowls will cleanse and charge your crystals, while also providing you a calming, meditative space as well.
WATER Non-porous, non-metal and polished crystals bring with them the ability to be cleansed and charged under smooth, gentle running water.
EARTH Connect your crystals directly with Mother Earth’s energy by burying it under loose soil in the ground itself.
OTHER CRYSTALS There are a rare few crystals that have the ability to cleanse and charge other crystals, with the most accessible ones being Amethyst – for its highly spiritual and protective qualities, and Selenite - one of the very few that can quickly unblock stagnant energy and remove negative energy. Placing your crystals in the presence of either Amethyst or Selenite does well to cleanse and charge them.
SMOKE / SMUDGING “Smudging” your crystals with the gentle burning of Palo Santo Incense or California White Sage is yet another method of cleansing them. This ancient act also induces calm, rids negative emotions, purifies the air, helps with sleep, and provides a holistic cleansing of the space you’re in.
However, due to the diverse nature and origins of certain crystals, there are some exceptions to take note of:
CRYSTALS THAT DO NOT LIKE WATER Celestite/Angelite, Malachite, Raw Clusters, Selenite, Kunzite, Kyanite, Malachite, Calcite, Labradorite.
CRYSTALS THAT DO NOT RESPOND WELL TO SUNLIGHT Aventurine, Amethyst, Aquamarine, Beryl, Citrine, Kunzite, Sapphire, Fluorite, All Quartz.
CRYSTALS THAT DO NOT NEED CLEANSING OR CHARGING Selenite, All Quartz, Carnelian, Amethyst, Kyanite.
The world of crystals is truly vast and we will continue on our journey to provide the community with education, awareness and stories of these wonderful gifts from the earth. Meanwhile, we urge you to explore the wealth of written materials from the various sources that provide in-depth looks at this incredible world.
When we care for our crystals, we’re caring for ourselves; we’re allowing energy that’s inharmonious with our lives and intentions to leave in a manner that is peaceful and healing.
Taking these simple measures of care will allow us to be more mindful in our interactions with the stones, with ourselves, and with the energies around us.
